Meaning of Sedation Dentistry:

Sedation dentistry also called sleep dentistry is the procedure where the dentist uses medication or drugs for relaxing the patient. The dentist gives this medication either before or during any long dental surgery where the patient needs to lay at one place for a long period.

The patient stays awake after receiving the sedation. He/she may fall asleep only when they get general anesthesia.

What are the Levels of Giving Sedation?

Below are the levels of sedation used by the dentist depending on the requirement:

  • Minimal sedation:

Here, the dentist uses minimum sedation, which makes you relaxed but awake.

  • Moderate or Conscious sedation:

Here, you will stay awake but not fully conscious. Further, you may not clearly remember the procedure too.

  • Deep sedation:

Under this level, you are at a point where you may lose your consciousness but are still awake.

  • General anesthesia:

Here, you lose consciousness completely.

Types of Sedation Dentistry:

  • Inhaled minimal sedation or Laughing gas:

This is a type of sedation technique where you have to inhale laughing gas (nitrous oxide). The dentist combines the laughing gas along with the oxygen and places the mask on your nose. Once you inhale it, you feel relaxed and calm.

  • Oral Sedation:

Another type of technique is oral sedation. Under this method, the dentist will give you a pill, which you need to take a night before your dental treatment. The patient may feel minimal to moderate effect, depending on the pill power.

  • IV moderate sedation:

Here, the patient receives sedation through veins. This type of sedation technique works faster.

Both family dentists and general dentists all around Escondido and surrounding areas use the sedation method of dentistry as and when required.

However, the dentist needs to follow a certain set of rules while using this method.
