Dental Implant Singapore: How Painful is Getting a Dental Implant?

You may need dental implants if you lose some of your teeth. The dental implants, in this case, will replace your lost teeth and help you regain the ability to chew food well again.

Dental implants may also be recommended if you have severely damaged teeth that make you self-conscious of your smile. This way, they will help you restore that once beautiful smile so you can smile with confidence once more.

It doesn’t even end there; dental implants can also preserve your bone structure to protect your teeth. If your primary doctor recommends a dental implant, Singapore guarantees you some of the best options when it comes to the qualified dentists to choose from for your treatment.

Singapore is widely known as home to some of the best dentists. It also ranks highly among the regions with highly developed but affordable healthcare systems.

Do Dental Implant Surgeries Hurt?

Before consenting to have your dental implant in Singapore, you may want to know what to expect before, during, and after treatment. If you’re concerned about the pain you will experience when getting a dental implant; this guide was created for you. Keep reading as it breaks down the dental implant basics you probably didn’t know.

Firstly, the Basics

To understand whether dental implant surgeries may hurt, it is imperative that you have some background information on the components of a dental implant. It would also be best if you understand how the implants are put in.

The dental implants are made of three basic components: They include; the fixture, abutment, and dental prosthesis. The dental implants are more like cylinders or screws creatively designed to match your teeth.

They’re made from medical-grade titanium material, so you really do not need to worry about their safety if you are getting your dental implant in Singapore at an accredited clinic. They’ve been tested and confirmed to be safe for replacing damaged teeth or providing support for permanent fixed teeth or temporary teeth.

The component of your dental implant, known as the fixture, is the part that will be embedded and fixed into your jaw. It will serve as your dental implant’s artificial root. On the other hand, the abutment is the part of the dental implant that will be lying above your gum line.

It helps in securing the crown and providing the needed support. It can also be used for supporting and securing other dental works like dental bridges and dentures etc.

Finally, the dental prosthesis is the component that will be fixed on top of the second component; the abutment. It works like a real tooth, so you can use it for chewing naturally.

You will be given anesthetic treatment before your dental implant surgery, so basically, dental implant surgery doesn’t hurt. There are different anesthesia options, and the specific option that would be recommended for you will depend on factors like your pain tolerance levels and risks to some anesthesia options.

The dentist may recommend general anesthesia, local anesthesia, or sedation. You may need to observe a few specific preparation guidelines depending on the anesthesia option recommended for you.

For instance, if you’re going to be put to sleep during the treatment, you will be advised to not eat anything past midnight and avoid alcohol for a couple of days as it may increase your risks of complications. Again if general anesthesia or sedation will be used for your treatment, you will be advised to have someone who will accompany you home after your treatment.

Installing the Dental Implant

There are different types of dental implants, so the way your implants will be fixed will depend on the type of implant you’re getting. Another significant determiner in the way your dental implant surgery is done is your jawbone’s condition.

Do note that since dental implant placement requires the implants to be placed in your jawbone, the bone will have to tightly heal around the implant to provide the support and strength needed for your artificial tooth. The healing process may take some time, and this is one of the basics your dentist will want you to acknowledge before consenting to get the dental implant in Singapore. Here’s what you can expect when getting a dental implant;

●       The Preparation

As mentioned earlier in this guide, you will be given anesthesia treatment, so you will barely feel any pain during the treatment. Apart from the anesthesia, other preparations that your dentist will do is removing damaged the damaged teeth (if your teeth are damaged)

After the damaged teeth have been removed, your oral surgeon may need to perform bone grafting. Bone grafting in dental implant installation is necessary if you have a very soft jawbone or if the jawbone isn’t as thick as required to offer support to your dental implant.

●       Dental Implant Placement

To install the implant, the oral surgeon will need to make an incision on your gum to open it and expose the jawbone. They will then carefully drill holes into the jawbone.

These holes are strategically drilled to create spaces where your dental implant posts (the artificial tooth roots) will be fixed. After the implant post has been fixed into the jawbone, you will need to wait for the bone to grow around it. This process is known as osseointegration and may take some months for your jawbone to grow tightly around the dental implant roots.

●       Abutment and New Teeth Placement

The abutment will only be placed when the osseointegration process is complete. Abutment placement is a minor surgery, so you may only need local anesthesia. For this step, the dentist will reopen the gum and then attach the abutment.

You will need to wait for some time as your gums heal before crowns are placed. Depending on your preferences, you may choose to have removable or fixed crowns.

The removable crowns can easily be removed for cleaning or repair purposes. On the other hand, the fixed crowns are permanent, and you cannot remove them on your own.

After the treatment, some of the side effects you can expect include swelling, bruising, minor bleeding, and localized pain on the implant site. Your dentist may prescribe pain medications or recommend ice compresses.
